From none to three with one call

So it all started with a call from the missionaries. It went something like this. "Sister Infanger we have a strange favor to ask." This wouldn't be the first time. "We stopped to help some ladies on the side of the road coming back from Zone Conference in Tupelo and they gave us three dogs. We can't keep them. Can you look after them?" I think I might have paused before answering. I was rushing out the door when they called but this was my reply. "Do they have any tags? Did you call the number? Meet us at the church and we'll figure out what to do with them. " They are three, a mom and two puppies. Apparently there were three puppies but the third was smart enough to run home.

After we got them home and set up for the night SR tried the number again (no area code) and after the AL area code didn't work he tried the MS one. Well what do you know it worked. The conversation went something like this:

"Hello, Mrs. Brown? I think we found your dogs."

"Just leave them there and they'll come home."
"Well we have them here in Florence AL."
"How'd they get all the way up there?"
"Some people I work with have bigger hearts than sense."
"Well you can bring them back and drop them off or find new homes for them."

There might have been some more to this but that is the gist. SR told her he'd be in Tupelo again on Sunday and could bring them back. She told him to leave them at a street and they'd find their way home. He got her address. She didn't really seem to care too much whether they came back or not. The mom is basset hound mix. And the puppies are a mix of lab maybe. They are so friendly and love starved. Adorable too. The kids have named them but they are not staying.

The kids (EJ mostly) have asked why we can't keep one too many times to count. My answer is always to same NO. For many reasons. No fence, don't want to spend the money on care, they smell, I'd be the main caregiver and I have my hands full already, they are outdoor dogs. The list could go on. They are not unhappy to be in the garage (which now needs to be emptied and bleached) but would rather be outdoors exploring. Did I mention they eat plants? We'll see if the plants survive two puppies knocking them over and ripping leaves off.

We are still semi-looking for loving homes here but we'll take them back to the owner on Sunday if not. Ah the joys of helping others! I may think twice before answering the phone when the missionaries call.

hello!

and exactly why we will not be jumping into pet ownership again soon: "I will be the primary caregiver...". And I do not want it.

Yes! Thankfully they are all gone now. The only remaining evidence is stray dog hair. Lucky for us. If and When we have fenced yard then Scott can have a running buddy. Though I will still be somehow in charge. That's life. Maybe when there are no kids at home during the day.:)
